Samsung is back to mocking Apple and you’re going to love its latest trolling ad

Image
Samsung is back to one of its favorite pastimes – making fun of Apple and every little thing that could be perceived as a shortcoming of the iPhone against whatever is the latest Galaxy device. The latest main character is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is shown as having an amazing AI feature that the iPhone 16 Pro lacks. A new Samsung ad, posted across social media, opens with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 alongside an iPhone. The video, called “The Real Upgrade”, continues with a demonstration of the AI-based image generation features of Samsung’s device, which don’t exist on an iPhone. The ad finishes with the question “Can your phone do that?”, and a character putting away his iPhone in exasperation. That’s far from Samsung’s first dig at Apple. The dissing dates back to at least 2011, when Samsung made fun of the huge lines in front of Apple Stores that anyone who wanted an iPhone had to endure in order to buy a device. Years later, a Galaxy S5 ad made a jab at the iPhone’s batter...

What Samsung is doing to the Galaxy S26 Ultra will convince even more people to just get an iPhone

Image
When it was first announced that Samsung was rounding out the corners on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, I was pretty mad. The Samsung phones had, in just a couple of years, become almost unrecognizable from their past counterparts. Those sharp edges, that authoritative presence, and the overall vibe exuding from them — that of a true flagship phone — become unmistakable. And now, Samsung was just throwing it away. Granted, the new design is a bit easier on the hands, but I was in the camp of people who wanted the Galaxy flagships to remain looking like the most commanding phones on the market. Suffice to say that the new design, no matter how sleek and pretty it looks, is a downgrade for me. And, what do you know, Samsung is doing it again with even rounder corners for the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Samsung phones are losing their identity If Samsung is making its flagship even rounder, then it is completely giving up the visual identity associated with its phones. The S26 Ultra will look even more...

Huawei is betting you'll forget the Galaxy Z tri-fold once you see its cheaper Mate XTs

Image
While we're holding our breath to see what Samsung has to offer in terms of a tri-fold, Huawei is getting ready to release a successor to its Mate XT Ultimate Design, the world's first commercially available tri-fold. The best thing about it is that it could be priced lower than the original Huawei tri-fold. The new cutting-edge foldable (which is well into tablet territory given its 10.2-inch screen size) is allegedly going to be dubbed Mate XTs, something we reported in early January 2025. So, the original Mate XT Ultimate Design had a staggering price of €3,500 for markets outside China, which translates to about $4,100. Now, a report claims that its successor, the Huawei Mate XTs, could be priced at 15,000 yuan, which is closer to $2,100 when directly converted. Of course, if the Mate XTs steps outside China, the price for international markets will surely be higher, but it's safe to say that it'll be lower than $4,100. Which is great: "traditional" folda...

Samsung's New Phones Show How Far Ahead China Is on Innovation

Image
Earlier this week, Samsung announced the latest generation of its high-end foldable phones at its Summer Galaxy Unpacked event. The Galaxy Z Fold7 and the Galaxy Z Flip7 are variously lighter, thinner, and less crease-prone than before. They are more expensive too. Some call them the “foldables to beat.” It’s Samsung messaging and a commentator response that sounds an awful lot like what we heard last year. And the year before that, for that matter, in a hall of echoes typical of the iterative progress loop much of consumer tech hardware has fallen into. It's not that we think they'll be bad—we liked their predecessors just fine. It's just that when you compare them to the progress being made by Chinese competitors, they feel a bit dull and already a step behind in an area they are widely thought to lead. Déjà Vu It’s a situation we are already watching unfold with EVs, something that was most stark at this year’s Shanghai Auto show. WIRED writer Alistair Charlton called t...

iPhone 17 Pro Rumored to Finally Get Reverse Wireless Charging

Image
New rumors suggest the iPhone 17 Pro may finally include reverse wireless charging, allowing it to wirelessly charge accessories like AirPods and the Apple Watch. This long-awaited feature, if implemented, would be a major step for the iPhone, turning it into a central power hub for all your devices. We’ve all been there: you’re out and about, you check your Apple Watch, and the battery is critically low. Or maybe your AirPods case is completely dead just when you need to make a call. The solution, for now, is to find a power outlet or hope you have a battery pack. But what if your iPhone could save the day? Well, a related long-standing rumor is gaining new momentum. Fresh reports suggest that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will offer a long-awaited reverse wireless charging feature. We know that Android phones have had this feature for years. However, it would be great news for the iPhone. This isn’t a new rumor—it’s been circulating for years—but new reports fr...

Review: The Fairphone (Gen. 6)

Image
I have always loved the idea of the Fairphone. A fair-trade, repairable smartphone designed to be used for a long time, shedding the notion of upgrading every year or two. The idea makes it more environmentally friendly than every other phone. The goal is admirable, but the company's hardware always fell short in a few ways. The Fairphone 5, for example, had a mediocre camera and so-so performance. I've now been using The Fairphone (Gen. 6) for two weeks, and I don't feel like the phone is severely lacking in a specific department. Could the camera be better? Sure, but many of the images in my photo library from my test period are perfectly serviceable. The biggest downside is that the company still isn't selling the phone officially in the US, though you can import it. US carrier support is spotty—it should be fine on T-Mobile and its mobile virtual network providers (I tested it on Google Fi without problems)—but you will likely face issues on AT&T and Verizon.
